First, a little
background on search engines. Many of the major searches use different methods
of determining search rankings and where your website ranks among your
competitors has to be addressed on several levels to place higher rankings
on each. I won't get into the specifics of each search engine (here), but I
think at least a few people can figure things out easy enough for themselves
(I've said elsewhere in this site ... "it's not rocket science"). There
are many search engines but most people use only a few. Among that list
(in no specific order are):
Google - Most
complex of all search engines which can be unfair to it's users. Based partly
on algorithms and links, they are more likely to produce results you don't
want, configured by their system, which is based a good deal on
who you know rather than what you know. They want you to pay
and you probably will since they say they are #1.
Yahoo - #1 visited
website, still one of the top search engines. Fair, but very profit
minded.
MSN - It's said they are
the #3 top search engine and always trying to do better. They are the
fairest of the fair.
American On Line - powered
by Google (see Google above)
Clusty* (OK, so Clusty
isn't one of the top search engines, but should be ... try it for yourself by
going to
www.clusty.com and when you see how it "clusters," you'll
want to get their toolbar and make it your top choice for searches. Fell free
to use Clusty to perform the searches listed below.
Searches are based
on keywords, or the search words used by both the searcher and the crawling
robots that search engines use to determine rankings. Thus, a searcher enters
the words he seeks info on, and here's a few good examples. These
search rankings were as of 3/11/06. Remember that search rankings
change on a daily basis, so we might not be #1 everyday, but we should still be
on the first page of results (still very good):
First,
go to
http://search.msn.com
Then place the keywords - townhouses boca raton - in the
search box. As of 3/11/06,
www.amysoffice.com
, a Wolfdreams developed and managed real estate
website comes up #1. The same search on Yahoo (3/11/06) came up with both
#1 & #2 position for amysoffice.com. That's the way we like it.
Next,
still on msn's search, enter the keywords - ufo paranormal books - in the
search box. Guess who is #1 (seems I've seen that name before). And, on 3/11/06,
Wolfdreams Books also comes up #1 on Yahoo, American On Line, Clusty.
AltaVista, AllTheWeb and #3 on Lycos. As for Google, I'm forced to play
their game, so I come up on the first page of their sponsors under a search of
- ufo books - (" ... if you can't beat 'em, join 'em").

The message here: This is what you want to achieve for your
website and you don't want to pay a lot of money to get results. You want
someone to be able to tell you why you rank as high (or low) as you do. You want
accountability, not a request for more fees (I only charge $9.95 for search
engine submission and metatags for my accounts and the rest is all in the way we
apply the basics).
